Contribution to the development of remote sensing is noted at the state level

On 10 April 2025, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev awarded the Order ‘Kurmet’ to Irina Sergeevna Vitkovskaya, a leading researcher of JSC ‘National Centre for Space Research and Technology’, for her outstanding contribution to the development of science and active participation in public and scientific-expert activities of the country.
Irina Vitkovskaya is a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, a highly qualified specialist in the field of Earth remote sensing with 34 years of work experience in the space industry. She is also a member of the National Scientific Council of the Science Committee of Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the priority area Advanced Manufacturing, Digital and Space Technologies’.
Under her leadership, innovative methods of processing and analysing satellite data are being developed, opening up new opportunities for understanding the processes occurring on the Earth’s surface. Thanks to her deep theoretical knowledge, scientific intuition and many years of experience, I. Vitkovskaya has made a significant contribution to the development of technologies for remote sensing of spatial and temporal features of the emergence and development of drought conditions in Kazakhstan.
Her scientific research covers such topical areas as identification of areas subject to drought, determination of intensity of drought events and vegetation response to extreme weather conditions using both historical and modern space imagery data.
I. Vitkovskaya achievements have become an important milestone in strengthening the scientific potential of Kazakhstan and contribute to the development of advanced technologies in space monitoring and sustainable environmental management.
