Specialists of JSC ‘National Centre for Space Research and Technology’ (NCSRT), adviser to the chairman of the board Buralkhieva R.S. and head of the space monitoring laboratory Bekmukhamedov N.E., took part in a two-day seminar devoted to the development of a Master Plan for the conservation of the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash. The event was held in Almaty with the support of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Kazakhmys Corporation LLP.
During the seminar, the key areas of conservation and restoration of the unique aquatic ecosystem of the Ile-Balkhash basin were discussed. NCSRT specialists presented approaches to the use of Earth remote sensing and satellite monitoring technologies for operational assessment of the lake state, analysis of changes in water resources, as well as identification of anthropogenic impact.
The solutions proposed by NCSRT envisage integration of space monitoring data into the digital platform being developed under the Master Plan, which will improve the accuracy and efficiency of assessment of the current state of the lake and the natural environment.
NCSRT participation in the project emphasises the importance of introducing modern scientific and technological tools into the processes of sustainable water use and environmental protection. The Centre intends to continue working as part of an expert group to further develop scientific and technical solutions to protect the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash.
